Police: Wanted felon led officers on 115 mph car chase before crashing in Durham

Police say a Durham man was speeding Wednesday over 90 mph in a 45 mph zone when he crashed, sending his car down an embankment.

The Durham Police Department around 4:15 a.m. responded to a single-car crash on Midland Terrace near Durham Fire Station No. 9. Midland Terrace was temporarily closed from Camden Avenue to E. Greer Street.

Police said Anthony Williams, 21, of Durham, was speeding before 4 a.m. on Durham Road in Roxboro. Roxboro officers tried to stop Williams but said he fled toward Durham, speeding 115 mph.

According to police, Williams lost control of his car while crossing the intersection of Midland Terrace and Camden Avenue in Durham. Police said his car flipped several times.

When officers searched the car, they found a "large amount of drugs," an AR-15 and a handgun. Police said records showed Williams was wanted for an outstanding felony warrant from Durham. He was also wanted out of Martinsville, Virginia, for felony breaking and entering, abduction, brandishing a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and assault and battery.

Williams was transported to Duke Hospital in critical, but stable, condition.

He was charged with felony speed to elude, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver a schedule II substance, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver a schedule II substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon and driving while license revoked.

Durham police were still on scene at 7:30 a.m. working to determine how fast the car was going before it fell into an embankment.

Williams' car was badly damaged, with the roof almost caved in and the trunk open. Debris were everywhere.
