Man from NC's Tyrrell Prison Work Farm dies after he was injured by other offenders

An offender at Tyrrell Prison Work Farm died Wednesday from injuries he received when he was assaulted by other offenders on June 9.

Michael F. Crumbley died at 1:33 a.m. at an outside medical facility, according to the state Department of Adult Correction (DAC).

The Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating.

The DAC has also launched an internal investigation.

Crumbley, 58, was serving a 12-year sentence for a 2018 conviction in Cleveland County as a habitual felon and drug possession. His projected release date was Jan. 7, 2026.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm is a minimum-security prison for men located on 200 acres of land near Columbia, N.C.
