A Wake County Public School System teacher was surprised on Wednesday with some of the best news an educator can get.

Neil Young, PE teacher at Brentwood Elementary, found out he was named national Teacher of the Year by the First Tee youth golf program.

"It's overwhelming, but I'm very happy," Young said. "I'm proud of the kids. The kids are the reason we are doing this. They have done a wonderful job with the program. And I'm just honored to be a part of it."

Young had no idea he had won the award until he was called to the school's front office for the big reveal. Students were excited to hear their teacher had been recognized.

"He cares about me and my family outside of school and inside of school," said third grader Kohen Kurisu.

"He does so many things for us," said fourth grader Emma Donleycott. "Since he's our PE Coach, he always does different fun things to make us be happy."
