TurboTax owes money to customers who could have used free file

People who paid to use TurboTax between 2016 and 2018 but were eligible to file for free through the IRS free file program will get $30 back in the settlement.

You may be owed some money if you used TurboTax to file your taxes between 2016 and 2018.

The North Carolina Attorney General's Office argued that TurboTax charged users for services that were actually free.

They won that argument and now the tax filing software company will pay $4.5 million to users in North Carolina.

Who qualifies for money back from TurboTax

Here’s who qualifies:

People who paid to use TurboTax between 2016 and 2018, but were eligible to file for free through the IRS free file program.

Those who qualify can expect to be contacted by the settlement administrator Rust Consulting via email.

Checks of about $30 each will be mailed later this month.
